About us

Twenty-six years of teaching Amsterdam to dance

Extremos is a salsa and bachata dance school in Amsterdam. It was founded in 2000 and has been running classes in the city ever since: four rooms, more than fifty classes a week, every level from absolute beginner to advanced, and over a thousand people who now know what to do when the music starts. You do not need a dance partner and you do not need any experience to start.

How we teach

Two ideas, and they explain most of what we do differently.

A fixed group at the start

Beginners and Improvers run as six-week courses with the same people, the same teachers, the same night. Learning to dance is uncomfortable for the first few weeks, and it is far easier among people who are just as lost as you are.

You move up when you can dance it

From Intermediate on, a teacher decides you are ready, not the calendar and not the number of classes you attended. It is slower and occasionally annoying, and it is the reason our Intermediate room actually dances at Intermediate level.

Rotation, always

Partners change every few minutes in every class. You learn to lead or follow anyone rather than the one person you came with, which is what makes a social dance floor possible at all.

The people

Ivan Pavon founded Extremos and still teaches the beginners bootcamps himself. He also organises the Amsterdam International Salsa Festival.

Come and see for yourself.

A try-out class is five euro and an hour of your evening. That is a lower bar than reading another page about it.
