Try-outs

Every six weeks, at every level

A try-out week runs before each new course round. If you have never danced, this is where you find out whether it is for you. If you danced somewhere else, this is where you find out which of our levels you belong in.

Two ways to
use a try-out.

They are ordinary classes at a try-out price. What differs is why you are in the room.

Never danced at all

Start at the beginning

€5one class, 60 minutes

Beginners 1 assumes nothing: not rhythm, not coordination, not a single step. Come alone, leave having danced with twenty people.

You want: to find out whether this is for you at all.

Everything for beginners
You danced somewhere else

Find your level

€10one class, per level you try

Levels do not translate between schools. Intermediate somewhere else can be Improvers here, or Advanced. Rather than guess from a description on a website, come and dance one.

You want: to be placed correctly the first time.

Book a try-out

Trying two levels in one week is allowed and fairly common, and often the fastest way to feel the difference.

The try-outs of
Mon 26 – Fri 30 October

Everything you can try this round, at every level. Pick a night, pick a level, and book the one class.

The schedule for this round will be announced soon.

Only classes that are open as a try-out this round are listed. The rest of the week is on the schedule.

Which one
do you pick?

First the dance, then the level. Click a level to see what happens in that try-out and what you should already be able to do.

Salsa

Six steps, with a pause in them

Faster, and more of it happens across the floor: turns, patterns, changes of direction. If the spinning is what drew you in, this is the one.

Bachata

Four steps, with a tap on the fourth

Slower and closer, from the Dominican Republic. More movement through the body than through the feet. Most people get somewhere with it inside an hour.

Plenty of people end up doing both, and the levels run separately: you can be Improvers in one and Beginners in the other. Nothing says you have to choose for good.

How a try-out actually goes

Nobody stands at the side with a clipboard. It is a normal class that happens to have someone paying attention to you.

You pick a level

Your best guess is fine. Not sure between two? Mail us what you have danced and for how long, and we will point at one.

You dance the class

The whole hour, with partner rotation, exactly like everyone else in the room. It is a class, not an exam.

The teacher watches

They are looking at your timing, your lead or follow, and how you handle something new, not at whether you already know the combination.

You hear it afterwards

Straight away, in person. Either this is your level, or it is one up or one down, and why.

What you leave with

From Intermediate 1 upwards you need a medal from a teacher before you can book a class at that level. A try-out is the normal way to get one.

A medal

Given for what you can dance

Never for how long you have been coming or how many classes you attended. From Intermediate on, the difference between two people who started on the same day can be a year.

Or a temporary one

Valid for a week

Nearly there? A teacher can hand you a temporary medal so you can dance that level for a week and see it from the inside. They turn it into a permanent one when it fits.

Or an honest no

With the level that does fit

Being placed a level too high is not a favour. You spend six weeks half a beat behind and stop enjoying it. We would rather have you a level too low for one hour.

The next round

Mon 26 – Fri 30 October

Then every six weeks, in the week before a new course round starts. Beginners courses begin the week after.

What it costs

€5 for Beginners 1 and 2 · €10 from Improvers up

Paid per class, so trying two levels in one week is two try-outs.

Where

De Kroon · Orchid House · Mr. de Wit

Higher levels also run at VROG on Mr. Visserplein. For classes in De Kroon, go in through Heck’s Café at number 15.

Not sure which level?

Ask before you book

Tell us what you have danced, where and for how long. info@extremos.nl

The next try-out week starts Monday 26 October.

An hour of dancing and a straight answer about where you belong. That beats six weeks in the wrong room.
