When should beginners start going to socials

As a teacher with over 25 years of experience teaching beginners how to dance, one thing has never changed. Beginners are often afraid to go to a social. And that is a real shame, because that is actually the best part of learning a social dance like salsa or bachata. Everyone dances with each other. That is where it all comes together.

We hear it all the time:
“I’m going to wait until I feel a bit more confident before going to a party.”
“I’ll join the socials once I’ve mastered the basics.”

It sounds logical, but it works against you. Waiting until you’re “good” before you start social dancing will slow down your progress massively.

The Fastest Way to Improve? Dance More

What you learn in class is just the starting point. The real progress happens when you take those moves to the dance floor. That is where you learn to adapt, connect with different partners, and build confidence.

Social dancing is not something you unlock later. It is the training ground for both salsa and bachata.

Make It Easy. Go With Your Classmates

Going alone can feel like a big step. So don’t. Go with people from your class. Everyone is in the same situation, and having familiar faces around makes it much easier to get started.

Where to Practice Salsa and Bachata in Amsterdam

If you are learning salsa or bachata in Amsterdam, practicing at real socials is the fastest way to improve.

We organize free socials every Wednesday and Sunday at De Kroon. These nights are relaxed and beginner friendly. No pressure, just dancing and getting used to the environment.

Don’t Miss the Rookie Social

At the end of every beginner course, we organize a Rookie Social. This is the perfect first step into the social scene for both salsa and bachata dancers. Everyone is more or less at the same level, so it feels natural to ask each other to dance and just try things out.

A Few Unwritten Rules on the Dance Floor

To make the experience enjoyable for everyone, there are a few simple things to keep in mind:

Wear clean clothes. If you sweat easily, bring an extra shirt.
Use deodorant. You are dancing close to other people, it matters.
Do not bring your own drinks. This is a big no at any social.
Do not ask the same person over and over again. Once or twice is fine, unless you already know each other.

Everyone Was a Beginner Once

Every experienced dancer you see today started exactly where you are now. And here is something many beginners don’t realize. Advanced dancers actually like seeing new faces in the scene. They know that without new beginners coming in, there will eventually be no new advanced dancers either. The scene depends on new energy, new people, and new connections.

So if you are waiting until you feel ready, stop waiting.
You are ready now.
