Salsa is basically Cuban music (which itself is a mix of African and European music) combined with other musical styles likes Jazz, Be-Bop and Swing. Back in the 50's musicians in New York of mainly Cuban and Puerto Rican descant started to mix the 'old' Cuban rhythms whith the music which was being played in the States. This music became more and more popular with a big boom in the 70's. One record Label named FANIA started to contract all the best Latin Musicians and release records with the name 'SALSA'. This is how all the different Latin rhythms started being refered to as SALSA. Today, when we speak about salsa, we do not include other rhythms like Merengue or Bachata.
